Google prepares space AI data center from 2027

Google is starting to enter a new phase in the development of artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure. In a recent interview with Fox News, Google CEO Sundar Pichai revealed that the company is preparing to build an AI data center in space. This step became part of the Project Suncatcher which was announced earlier this month.

Project SunCatcher is designed to find a more efficient solution in supplying energy for data centers. This idea emerged from the great potential of solar energy that can be utilized directly from Earth’s orbit. According to Pichai, sunlight in outer space has a much greater amount of energy than all the energy produced on Earth today.

“One of our big targets is how one day we can have a data center in outer space so that we can utilize solar energy which amounts to 100 trillion times greater than all the energy produced on Earth today.”

Google is targeting an early trial in 2027 through a partnership with Planet, a company engaged in satellite imagery. Two pilot satellites will be launched to test data center hardware in Earth’s orbit. This project is expected to be the first step in the development of a more innovative and efficient AI infrastructure.

Pichai assessed that space-based data centers will be the industry standard in a decade. He explained that this approach will be more efficient on a large scale as the demand for artificial intelligence computing increases.

“But for me there is no doubt that in a decade or so, we will see it as a more normal way to build a data center,” he was quoted as saying by Fortune.

Apart from Google, several other companies are also taking similar steps. StarCloud, a startup supported by Y Combinator and Nvidia, has sent its first satellite to test AI modules in space. Starcloud CEO Philip Johnston estimates that orbit data centers can produce much lower carbon emissions than on Earth’s facilities.
