Starlink Gains Approval to Operate in Vietnam
Vietnam has officially approved Elon Musk’s Starlink to provide satellite internet services within the country, as announced by a government agency. This move marks a significant step for the American tech company, which is now permitted to deploy its technology in the communist nation.
According to the radio frequency regulator, the local unit of Starlink, known as Starlink Services Vietnam Co., is allowed to initially set up four gateway stations and a maximum of 600,000 terminal devices across Vietnam. The licensing conditions emphasize that Starlink must ensure there is no interference with existing radio communication networks. This requirement was highlighted by the Radio Frequency Management authority in a statement released on Saturday.
The introduction of Starlink is expected to play a vital role in expanding satellite internet connectivity throughout the country. The service provides high-speed internet access to remote locations using thousands of low Earth orbit satellites. With nearly 80% of Vietnam’s population of around 100 million being internet users, according to the Vietnam Internet Network Information Center, there are still gaps in access, particularly in rural and mountainous regions.
SpaceX, the parent company of Starlink, did not immediately respond to a request for comment from AFP on Sunday. However, Starlink has indicated on its website that its services in Vietnam are “coming soon,” as reflected in an availability map.
Trade Talks and Political Developments
Vietnam and the United States are currently engaged in negotiations for a trade deal following the imposition of 20% tariffs on Vietnamese goods by Washington last year. The two countries held their sixth round of talks this month, but no final agreement has been reached yet.
In a related development, Vietnam’s top leader, To Lam, is scheduled to travel to the United States this week for a meeting of President Donald Trump’s “Board of Peace.” According to sources briefed on the visit, the board, which Trump chairs, was originally intended to oversee the rebuilding of the Gaza Strip after two years of conflict. However, its scope appears to extend beyond Palestinian territory.
The first meeting of the board is set to take place on February 19 in Washington. It remains unclear whether Communist Party General Secretary Lam will also engage in trade discussions with Trump. The Vietnamese government has not confirmed or publicly announced the trip.
Economic Growth and Future Prospects
Despite the challenges posed by U.S. tariffs, Vietnam’s economy recorded 8% growth last year, defying fears that the levies would significantly impact its export-driven growth model. Hanoi is now aiming for double-digit growth this year, signaling optimism about the country’s economic trajectory.
With the approval of Starlink and ongoing diplomatic engagements, Vietnam continues to navigate a complex landscape of international relations and economic development. The country’s strategic position as a manufacturing hub in Southeast Asia underscores its importance in the global supply chain.
