Old Face Due to Too Many Screens? This is the doctor’s explanation

Excessive Gadget Use and Its Impact on Skin Health

In the modern era like now, the use of gadgets has become an inseparable part of everyday life. Many jobs can be completed more easily thanks to digital devices. Apart from that, looking for entertainment or important information can also be done just by accessing the cellphone or laptop screen.

However, the longer a person spends in front of a screen, the greater the risk of negative impacts arising. One aspect that is often overlooked is skin health. Especially the effect of blue light emitted by various types of electronic devices.

What is Blue Light?

Blue light is blue light that comes from device screens such as smartphones, laptops, tablets or LED TVs. This type of light is included in the HEV (high energy visible light) category, which is part of the light spectrum emitted by the sun. Even though blue light has lower energy than UV-A and UV-B rays, it is able to penetrate the skin surface more deeply.

The Impact of Blue Light on Facial Skin

According to Dr. Tirta, a well-known doctor and influencer, said that blue light waves can interfere with the skin’s recovery process and increase oxidative stress. This makes the skin more susceptible to wrinkles and signs of premature aging.

Meanwhile, Dr. Dr. Fitria Agustina, a skin and genital specialist, explained that although blue light energy is smaller than UV light, long-term exposure can cause problems such as premature aging and uneven pigmentation on the face.

Research Reveals the Dangers of Blue Light

A study published in the Journal of Biology Education and Learning shows that cumulative exposure to blue light over a long period of time can cause damage to the skin. These rays are able to penetrate deeper and damage collagen and elastin, two important components for maintaining skin elasticity and structure.

When collagen and elastin are damaged, the epidermis becomes looser and prone to wrinkles. Apart from that, damage to skin cells due to blue light can also weaken the skin surface and slow down the cell regeneration process.

Steps to Protect Skin from Blue Light

To reduce this risk, dr. Tirta and Dr. Fitria provided several recommendations. First, use dark mode on digital devices to reduce the intensity of blue light. Second, reduce the screen brightness so that it is not too dazzling. Third, use the blue light filter available in various applications or devices.

In addition, it is important to limit the time you use gadgets. Even though the use of technology has become part of everyday life, we still need to be wise in managing the duration of screen time so that our skin health is maintained.

With better awareness about the dangers of blue light, we can protect our skin from long-term damage without having to give up the habit of using gadgets.
