Why are cars rarely used easily damaged?

Cars that are rarely used are not always more durable

Cars are complex engines designed to operate regularly. Although logically, a car that is rarely used may look more durable because it doesn’t work hard, in fact it’s the opposite. Many car components can be damaged if left unused for too long. Here are some common problems that often occur in cars that are rarely used.

1. The battery is easy to run out because it doesn’t get charging

One of the most common problems with cars that are rarely used is a weak or overdrawn battery. When the car is not started for a long time, the electric current from the alternator stops charging the battery. In fact, car electronic systems such as alarms, digital clocks, or ECUs still consume less power even though the engine is off.

If this is left for days, the battery voltage will drop and the car will be difficult to start. Aki that is often overdrawn can also be damaged quickly because the cells in it undergo sulfation (crystal buildup). To prevent this, you should start the car at least twice a week for 10-15 minutes so that the battery remains charged. If the car is really not in use for a long time, remove the negative terminal of the battery to avoid power discharging.

2. The engine components can be rusty or jammed

Car engines rely on lubrication from oil so that the metal components in it do not rub against each other directly. When the car is rarely started, the oil settles at the bottom of the crankcase and the top of the engine such as valves and pistons becomes dry. As a result, when the machine is first started again, metal friction occurs without adequate protection.

In addition, the humid air that enters the engine room can cause rust on the cylinder walls and exhaust ducts. If left for too long, rust can interfere with engine performance and trigger rough noise. Therefore, starting the car periodically and heating it for a few minutes is very important to maintain oil circulation and prevent rust from forming.

3. Brakes, tires, and liquid can decrease the quality

Not only the engine, brakes and tires can also have problems if the car is not used for too long. Brake fluid that absorbs moisture can cause bubbles and lower hydraulic pressure, making the brake pedals feel soft or even fail. In addition, tires that support vehicle loads in the same position for a long time can experience flat spots, namely the bottom of the tires that deflate permanently.

Coolant and fuel can also decrease in quality if it doesn’t circulate for too long. A precipitate can form in a fuel tank or radiator. Therefore, in addition to starting the engine, occasionally run the car at least a few meters so that the brakes, tires, and lubricant system still work.

Conclusion

Cars that are rarely used do not mean free from damage. In fact, the battery, engine, brake, and tire can be damaged more quickly if left too long without being used. Turning on the engine regularly, heating it for a few minutes, and running the car occasionally is a simple way to keep performance in top shape. With this light maintenance, the car will always be ready to use whenever needed.
