D and D+ functions on automatic transmission, not just accessories

Jakarta – In automatic transmission cars, drivers often see the symbols D- and D+ on the transmission lever. These two symbols are not just decoration, but important features that give the sensation of driving similar to a manual car.

Hermas Efendi Prabowo, owner of the Worner Matic automatic transmission specialist workshop, explained that this feature is known as Manual or Tiptronic.

“The existence of D-Main or D-Plus facilities is actually commonly called Manual. There are also those who call it Tiptronic, because we can drive a car with a sensation like a manual car,” said Hermas.

According to Hermas, this system allows the driver to shift gears manually without using a clutch pedal. That way, even if the car is automatic, the driver can still adjust the gearshift as needed on the road.

“When driving, we can shift gears manually, just like a car with a manual transmission,” he said.

The tiptronic or manual matic features are usually present in cars with more modern technology. In addition to providing a more active driving sensation, this system also improves vehicle control in various road conditions.

“This tiptronic or manual matic feature is usually found in cars with more modern technology and more sophisticated automatic transmissions. Its function is to provide a driving sensation like a manual car,” continued Hermas.

Hermas added, drivers can still use the car as usual without taking advantage of this mode. Simply position the lever at D, and the gear shift will take place automatically according to road conditions.

“If you don’t want to use it, just place the lever in position D, the gear shift will take place automatically,” he explained.

However, under certain conditions such as uphill or downhill, the use of D- and D+ can be very helpful.

“When passing through the uphill road, the position can be adjusted. If the incline is quite steep, you can use D-1, and if it feels less, it can be D-2 or D-3, depending on the need,” said Hermas.

According to him, not all cars have this feature. Some models only provide a choice of D-2, D-3, or L, which is an old system with similar functions but simpler technology.

“In some other cars that do not have manual or tiptronic features, usually on the transmission lever there are options such as D-2, D-3, or L. This technology is actually an older system, and is generally used in old cars or vehicles with a more affordable price category,” said Hermas.

Advantages of using the D- features and D+

Here are some of the benefits of using the D- and D+ features in automatic transmission cars:

  • Better control

The driver can adjust the gear shift according to road conditions, thus providing better control than the usual automatic mode.

  • Fuel Efficiency

By manually setting the gear, the driver can choose the most efficient gear for certain situations, such as when driving on a flat or uphill road.

  • driving comfort

This feature provides a more dynamic driving experience, especially for drivers who are used to manual cars.

  • Flexibility in various road conditions

When crossing the road uphill or downhill, the driver can choose the appropriate gear to maintain the stability of the vehicle.

Tips for using D- and D+

Some tips for using D- and D+ that drivers can apply:

  • Use D-1 for steep paths

If the uphill road is too steep, use the D-1 to maintain speed and prevent the car from sliding backwards.

  • Choose D-2 or D-3 for moderate increase

For uphill roads that are not too steep, choose D-2 or D-3 so that the car remains stable and saves fuel.

  • Use D+ to lower your teeth

When descending from the road uphill, use D+ to lower the gear so that the engine helps reduce the car’s speed.

  • Return to automatic mode when not needed

If there is no special need, return the transmission lever to position D so that the automatic system works optimally.

By understanding how to use D- and D+, the driver can maximize the comfort and performance of an automatic transmission car.
