the difference between cvt and at in automatic cars: simple explanation

Many car owners with automatic transmissions still do not clearly understand the difference between CVT and AT transmissions. In fact, even though they are included in the category of automatic transmission, each has different characteristics and ways of working.

According to Doddy Priatna, the owner of the Laris Matic workshop in Ciracas, East Jakarta, these two types of transmission have different driving sensations. Although both automatic, the purpose of use and the advantages of each are also different.

“CVT is smoother and more efficient, while conventional AT is stronger and more responsive,” said Doddy.

CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission) transmission works without fixed gear. The system uses two pulleys and a steel belt that can change diameter continuously according to the machine’s needs. Changes in the transmission ratio occur gradually, so that the gearshift feels smooth without pounding.

“With CVT, the engine speed can be maintained at an optimal level, so that gasoline consumption becomes more efficient,” explained Doddy.

Meanwhile, AT (Automatic Transmission) or conventional automatic transmission uses planetary gear set and torque converter as automatic clutch. The gear shift is carried out in stages, for example from one to two. This can cause a slight pounding when changing teeth.

The excess of AT transmission lies in its resistance in the face of heavy loads or extreme terrain. “If the car is often used to go up and down hills, carry heavy loads, or often stop and start on an incline, AT is more resistant than CVT,” added Doddy.

However, in terms of fuel efficiency, the CVT remains superior because it is able to keep the engine speed at the most efficient level.

Both CVT and AT transmissions, both still require regular maintenance so that their performance remains optimal. One of the important treatments is regular transmission oil changes. With proper maintenance, the transmission will be more durable and not easily damaged.
