What is safer, mixed or changing BBM? This is the expert’s explanation

The habit of mixing fuel and its impact on vehicle engines

There are still many motorized vehicle owners who mix two types of fuel oil (BBM) or replace them alternately. This habit is often done for reasons of efficiency, the availability of fuel at public gas stations (SPBU), or the desire to get more optimal engine performance.

According to a lecturer in Mechanical Engineering at the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB), Tri Yuswidjajanto, the habit of mixing fuel is actually more risky than just changing fuel types. He explained that several types of fuel have differences in the composition of additives.

“It should be noted that there are several types of fuel that contain additives and those that do not, for example Pertamax Turbo (RON 98) there are additives with the functions of detergents, anti-oxidants, anti-corrosion, dispersants, demulsifiers, while Pertalite does not,” said Tri to media, not long ago.

He added that the main difference between high-quality and low-quality fuel lies not only in the octane number, but also in the presence of additives. This substance serves to maintain the cleanliness of the engine and prevent the accumulation of carbon in the combustion chamber.

the impact of mixing fuel that does not contain additives

“If the fuel with the additives is mixed with the non-existent, it will actually cause a more severe deposit when compared to the fuel without additives at all, while changing the type of fuel is different,” said Tri.

Meanwhile, for vehicles that take turns using Pertalite and Pertamax, the impact is not as severe as mixing them together. When using pertalite, carbon deposits can indeed be formed. But when you return to using Pertamax, the additive content can help erode the deposit slowly.

Long-term effects of using high-quality fuel

Tri continued, although the process of cleaning the carbon crust is not instant, the use of high-quality fuel in the long term still has a positive effect on the machine. This includes improved engine performance and combustion efficiency.

Conclusion: Changing BBM is safer than mixing BBM

So, the habit of changing fuel is still relatively safer than mixing two types of fuel in one tank. Consistency in choosing high quality fuel remains the best way to maintain engine performance and combustion efficiency.

By understanding the difference between fuel that has additives and those that don’t, drivers can be wiser in choosing fuel that suits their vehicle’s needs. This not only helps maintain the condition of the engine, but also optimizes the overall fuel usage.
